A useful day at Lake Murray.

Oklahoma's first and largest state park is close enough to downtown Ardmore for an easy day trip—but large enough that choosing the right entrance matters.

Choose one main activity first

The best Lake Murray day is specific: one anchor activity, one scenic stop, and enough unplanned time to enjoy the water.

Lake Murray State Park surrounds a 5,728-surface-acre lake south of Ardmore. Across the park are swim areas, more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, marinas, a golf course, an ATV area, campgrounds, cabins, the lodge, and the Tucker Tower Nature Center. That variety is the appeal—and the reason a little planning prevents a day spent driving from entrance to entrance.

Choose the kind of lake day you want.

Trying to do every part of Lake Murray in one visit usually creates more driving than enjoyment. Use these four versions of the park to decide where the day should begin.

Water and swimming

For a summer day, choose a designated swim area or arrange a kayak, paddleboard, or boat rental before arrival. Bring water shoes, sun protection, drinking water, and a dry change of clothes. Marinas and rental operations are spread around the lake, so confirm the exact pickup point.

Best for · warm-weather half or full days

Tucker Tower and the Nature Center

Tucker Tower is Lake Murray's signature built landmark. Pair it with the Nature Center and a short trail rather than treating it as a drive-by viewpoint. The approach, exhibits, and views provide a useful introduction to the lake's geology, wildlife, and New Deal-era development.

Trails and shoreline

The park's trail systems include routes near the lodge, Buckhorn, Anadarche, and Tucker Tower. Download the relevant trail map instead of relying on one generic park pin, and match distance and exposure to the weather. Summer heat can make a modest walk feel much longer.

Best for · cooler mornings and shoulder seasons

Golf, fishing, boating, and ATV riding

These activities each need their own plan. Tee times, fishing licenses, boat access, rentals, and ATV regulations are separate from ordinary park entry. Reserve what you can, read the current rules, and navigate directly to the correct facility.

Best for · activity-led trips with advance reservations

The practical distinction

The park entrance is not the whole destination.

The park office is at 13528 Scenic Highway 77. The lodge is at 3323 Lodge Road, while Tucker Tower, marinas, trailheads, swim areas, golf, and ATV riding use other approaches. Save the destination you actually want—not simply “Lake Murray”—before leaving The Whistlestop.

Park entry is generally available daily, but individual facilities keep their own schedules. Tucker Tower and the Nature Center can have limited seasonal hours; rentals, concessions, and swimming services also change with the season.

Plan from the official Lake Murray page

A balanced one-day itinerary.

This plan works without trying to cover the entire shoreline. Shift the timing earlier during hot weather and always follow current park notices.

Morning · Start downtown

Have breakfast in downtown Ardmore, pack water and anything needed for your chosen activity, then drive directly to Tucker Tower, a trailhead, marina, or swim area.

Midday · Stay in one zone

Build the middle of the day around the water, a trail, golf, fishing, or ATV riding. If you are visiting Tucker Tower, combine it with nearby viewpoints and trails rather than crossing the park for several unrelated stops.

Evening · Return to Main Street

Head back to The Whistlestop, change at the loft, and walk to dinner or drinks. The contrast is what makes Ardmore a useful base: an outdoor day without giving up a walkable evening.

Where to stay

Sleep in town, not in the itinerary.

The Whistlestop has six individually designed lofts above Main Street in downtown Ardmore. It gives a Lake Murray trip a practical rhythm: restaurants and coffee on foot, the park by car, and a comfortable place to reset before dinner.

Lake Murray trip-planning FAQs

Know these before you leave downtown.

How far is Lake Murray State Park from downtown Ardmore?

The drive from downtown Ardmore is usually about 15 to 25 minutes, depending on which park entrance or recreation area you choose. Lake Murray is large, so Tucker Tower, the lodge, a swim beach, and the ATV area should be treated as separate destinations.

Do you need a parking pass at Lake Murray State Park?

A state-park parking pass may be required for your vehicle. Check the current Lake Murray page on TravelOK before leaving and purchase the appropriate pass there rather than relying on an older posted price.

Can you swim at Lake Murray?

Yes. Lake Murray has designated swimming areas and beaches, but conditions and seasonal services can change. Use a designated area, follow posted rules, and check current park notices before entering the water.

Is Tucker Tower worth visiting?

Tucker Tower and the Lake Murray Nature Center are among the park's most distinctive stops, combining lake views, local history, and nature exhibits. Their operating days and hours can be seasonal, so confirm them on the official park page first.

How long should you spend at Lake Murray?

Allow at least half a day for one focused activity and a scenic stop. A full day is better if you want to combine swimming or paddling with Tucker Tower, a trail, golf, boating, or the ATV area.

Planning note: park hours, water conditions, parking requirements, rentals, and seasonal operations can change. This guide was fact-checked against Oklahoma State Parks' official Lake Murray information.
